OVERVIEW

The Virtual Youth Engagement Framework (VYEF) is a model for designing and delivering meaningful youth work inside virtual and immersive environments. It was built not in a lab, but through five years of hands-on practice with real young people facing real barriers.

VYEF treats immersive technology not as a novelty, but as a legitimate facilitated social space — one that supports connection, creativity, and participation on equal terms. Where traditional youth work can't reach, VYEF can.

WHY IT MATTERS

Many young people experience barriers to participation that aren't always visible. Rural geography. Physical disability. Social anxiety. Neurodivergence. Being a young carer. Lacking a safe local space. For these young people, conventional services often fall short — not through lack of care, but through lack of access.

VYEF was developed specifically to respond to this gap. By creating structured, safe, and facilitated virtual environments, it allows young people to engage socially, build confidence, explore creativity, and develop real skills — on their own terms, from wherever they are.

WHO IT'S FOR

VYEF is designed for youth organisations, schools, local authorities, and funders working with young people who face barriers to traditional participation, including:

— Young people in rural or geographically isolated communities — Young people with physical disabilities or access limitations — Young people with autism spectrum disorder or other neurodivergent profiles — Young carers and those with significant caring responsibilities — Young people experiencing social anxiety or lacking safe local spaces — LGBTQ+ young people without affirming local provision

HOW IT WORKS

VYEF is not a one-size-fits-all programme. It is a flexible, values-led model that organisations adopt and shape around their own context and community. HoloGen works alongside delivery teams to design the environment, train facilitators, establish safeguarding protocols, and embed best practice from the ground up.

Delivery can be structured as an introductory pilot, a long-term programme, or an ongoing model of practice. Support includes facilitator training, equipment guidance, programme design, and follow-up evaluation.

CASE STUDIES

Ireland — Ongoing Since 2020

Five years ago, HoloGen piloted VYEF with a youth organisation in Ireland supporting young people facing additional challenges including physical disability, learning differences, and rural isolation. What began as an experimental programme is still running today — a testament to how immersive environments can create consistent, meaningful connection for young people who often fall through the gaps of traditional service delivery.

Finland — Regional Youth Service

A regional youth service in Finland was struggling to reach young people spread across a vast and sparsely populated geography. Through VYEF, they were able to create a shared virtual space where isolated young people could meet, participate, and build relationships — removing distance as a barrier to belonging.

United Kingdom — ASD Youth Engagement

A UK-based youth organisation wanted to find new ways to engage young people with autism spectrum disorder. VYEF provided a structured, predictable, and sensory-considerate virtual environment where participants could engage socially at their own pace — building confidence and communication skills in a space designed around their needs.

London — Young Carers

An inner-city London borough identified young carers as a group who were consistently missing out on youth provision — too busy, too overlooked, and too exhausted to engage. VYEF is being used to explore how immersive technology can reach this group on their own terms, offering connection and creative respite without adding to their burden.
